Welcome to Creative Kids Tales, Sally Murphy.
Sally has been on our wish list for some time. We love her work and were very happy when she accepted our invitation to chat.
Sally Murphy was born in Perth and from the age of three grew up in Collie with her five siblings. The youngest of four sisters and one brother, Sally’s earliest memories are filled with books and writing. One of the pluses being the youngest meant, there was always someone to play with, and when her siblings were in school, Sally spent her time creating her own fantasy worlds.
Memories of scribbling endlessly in her rainbow notepad while spending time in her mother’s office. Entertaining her fellow kindergarten class with readings of, Are you, My Mother? And entering countless competitions are all part of Sally’s colourful childhood.
Sally found her time growing up in the family Pub especially exciting. In 1978, a bomb was planted in their pub, thankfully no one was injured from the explosion but the time surrounding it was tense until the culprit was arrested.
Her formative years spent attending school in Collie. The final two years of high school were completed at boarding school before moving to University. It was during her first year at Uni, in fact her first week, that Sally met her husband to be, Julian. They still live in Western Australia with their six children.
After leaving school Sally completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Western Australia and then completed a Teaching Diploma at Edith Cowan University. She has taught English to high school students, music to primary school students as well as a variety of other subjects.
In 1996, her first book was published and after deciding to dedicate herself to writing in 2001 Sally’s career has flourished. Now with over 35 books to her credit including picture books, junior novels, verse novels and educational titles with the promise of more to come it is clear her decision paid off.
Sally wears many hats: mother, wife, teacher, reviewer, story teller, author and web site manager. You can read her book reviews at www.aussiereviews.com.
Some of the awards she has received include the Premier’s Literary Award (Children’s category) for Toppling in both Queensland and Western Australia.
In 2009 her book Pearl Verses the World (Walker Books) won the children’s book category for the Indie Book of the Year. It was also awarded in 2010 the Honour Book in the Younger Readers category of the CBCA Book of the Year Awards. Sally has also won awards through Speech Pathology Australia and the Mary Ryan’s Award.
