Welcome to Creative Kids Tales Dave Hackett.
I am very excited to welcome to Creative Kids Tales this month the uber-awesome cartoonist, Dave Hackett.
Not often do you get to say you have met a super hero, but when it comes to Dave Hackett, it’s the actual truth. He is known in certain circles as ‘Texta Man’. (Parts of this interview may be fiction or just lies we haven’t decided yet)
What can one say about Dave Hackett aka Cartoon Dave? Well I have to say this one was hard guest to research. His website contains no actual truth about this man and is pretty useless in revealing secrets about him, hence my superhero theory.
As best I can say is Dave Hackett was born. He claims he was born eleven years ago in an abandoned caravan a few kilometres to the left of Antarctica. I think not!
I have been able to ascertain that he lived in Sydney for a while and now lives in Queensland. He also claims his real name is Kevin Monkeypants. Again my research concludes this is in fact a lie.
He has a sister called Blister-face, owns fourteen dolphins and was once the president of the “‘Justin Bieber for Miss America” club. Other information found on his website, again a lie.
He honed his negotiation skills from a young age, striking a deal with his year 7 maths teacher, whereby he could draw a pic on every page once he completed his work. Maths quickly became a favourite subject.
I believe the smell of textas from his youth was just too intoxicating to give up. Dave, single handed keeps the Texta company in business, so much so they have branded him with their logo, see below.
But Dave’s creativeness doesn’t stop with his total outrageous drawings. No, he is also an author! His books such as; The Bum Book, Hamilton’s Handstand, Unstoppable Brainspin, the UFO series, Sumo Granny Smackdown and heaps of others have been reducing kids to uncontrollable laughing fits all over the country. Then there is Mad Cartooning, Hands-on Cartooning, Cartoon your big slimy brains out. Yes, there is a theme to these. Dave loves to impart his cartooning wisdom on just about anyone who will listen and even those who won’t.
He is a little bit addicted to being on TV. He currently stalks the TV execs at Channel 11, appearing on Toasted TV every Thursday between 7-7.30am. Friday afternoons he heads over to Channel 7 and after much begging is allowed to draw up a storm for the It’s Academic show at 4.00pm. His previous TV hang out’s include Disney’s The Big Doodle, ABC Creature Features, Cheez TV and Dave even visited old Moonface (Bert Newton) on Good Morning Australia back in 1998.
Unable to shake the lure of the camera, Dave now has his own Youtube ‘how to draw’ videos.
He is frequently found in schools and libraries conducting workshops and brainwashing kids into buying his books.
I had lots of fun chatting with Dave Hackett and I know you will have fun reading all about him.
Shhhh, Dave was also a contestant on Wheel of Fortune a long long long long time ago.
Teaching kids to draw nine headed whacky chickens is all in a day’s work for this cartoonist. And in a job where there are no rules drawing is perfect for this superhero of the ink world.
